Three overlapping circles holding a magnifier, a chat bubble and a sparkle

Quick answer

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business and content easy for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite in their generated answers. SEO earns rankings in search results; AEO targets direct answers; GEO targets mentions inside AI-written responses. BrainBean Technolabs in Anand, Gujarat handles all three for businesses.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO), in one paragraph

A generative engine is any tool that writes an answer instead of listing ten links. ChatGPT with search, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all do this. GEO is the work of getting your brand, facts and pages into those written answers, ideally with a citation link back to you.

It isn't a new trick. Most of it is good SEO and good PR, done with a sharper focus on being quotable and consistent. The shift is in the goal. You're no longer only trying to rank at position one. You're trying to be the source the AI believes and repeats.

SEO, AEO and GEO: plain definitions

SEO (search engine optimisation)

Improving your site, content and authority so search engines rank your pages in the organic results and the map pack. The output is a ranking and a click.

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

Answer engine optimization shapes content so a system can lift a direct answer from it: featured snippets, People also ask boxes, voice assistants and, now, AI tools. The output is your answer shown, often without a click.

GEO (generative engine optimisation)

Generative engine optimisation meaning, in practice: influencing what large language model tools say when they combine many sources into one response. The output is a mention, recommendation or citation inside that response. You'll also hear it called AI SEO, LLM optimization, AI search optimization or generative search optimization. Same idea, different labels.

Which businesses need GEO most

Every business benefits a little; these gain the most from starting early.

B2B manufacturers

Procurement teams now ask AI tools to shortlist suppliers. Clear specification pages and trade listings decide who gets named.

Clinics and hospitals

Patients ask assistants which doctor or hospital to visit. Reviews, profiles and plain service pages shape that answer.

Education and coaching

Parents and students compare institutes through AI chats. Factual course and faculty pages get cited.

Software and SaaS

Buyers ask for tool comparisons constantly. Honest comparison pages and review-site presence matter a lot.

Travel and hospitality

Trip planning is moving to AI assistants. Clear pages on packages, locations and seasons get pulled into itineraries.

Professional services

CAs, lawyers and consultants are recommended from mentions, directories and expertise content.

Local service businesses

Near-me style prompts draw heavily on Google Business Profile data and review themes.

Where the GEO term came from and why definitions overlap

The phrase took off after a 2023 academic paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", written by researchers from institutions including Princeton University and IIT Delhi. They tested how content changes, like adding statistics, quotations and clear sources, affected how often a page appeared in AI-generated answers.

Marketing people then picked it up, and every vendor defined it a bit differently. Some say AEO and GEO are the same thing. Others treat AEO as the older, snippet-focused discipline and GEO as the LLM-era version.

Are AEO and GEO the same? Honestly, the overlap is about 80 percent in the actual work. We treat AEO as "make a clean answer easy to extract" and GEO as "make your brand the one the model trusts across many sources". Don't lose sleep over the label. Ask any agency what they will actually change on your site and off it.

How generative engines choose sources to cite

Most AI search tools follow a similar pattern, even though each company keeps its details private.

  1. Understanding the question. The tool rewrites your prompt into one or more search queries, sometimes a dozen, a process often called query fan-out.
  2. Retrieval. It pulls candidate pages from a search index: Google's own for AI Overviews, Bing and its own crawlers for others.
  3. Synthesis. The language model reads those pages and writes a single answer, preferring passages that are clear, specific and agree with other trusted sources.
  4. Citation. It links the sources it leaned on. Some show three links, some show ten.

Two things follow from this. First, if you aren't indexed and ranking reasonably in normal search, you're rarely retrieved at all. Second, being retrieved isn't enough. Your passage has to be the easiest one to quote accurately.

The model's training data matters too. A brand mentioned consistently across many sites for years is simply "known" to the model, even without live search.

Where to start with GEO: a short action list

Do these in order; the first two make everything after them work.

  1. 01

    Check crawl access

Confirm search and AI crawlers can reach your key pages, and that nothing important sits behind scripts or PDFs.

  2. 02

    Fix entity consistency

Align name, address, phone, services and descriptions across your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.

  3. 03

    Rewrite key pages for quotability

Add a direct answer at the top, question headings, a table where useful and FAQs in plain language.

  4. 04

    Add structured data

Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links, plus Product or Service markup where it fits.

  5. 05

    Earn third-party mentions

Get listed on the directories and publications AI tools already cite for your topic, and build genuine reviews.

  6. 06

    Track prompts monthly

Monitor a fixed prompt list and AI referral traffic in GA4, then adjust content based on what gets cited.

Where SEO foundations still decide everything

Some people sell GEO as a replacement for SEO. It isn't. The GEO SEO difference is one of emphasis, not a separate foundation.

  • Crawling and indexing: if Googlebot, Bingbot or AI crawlers can't reach and render your pages, nothing else matters. Check robots.txt rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended so you don't block what you want to appear in.
  • Speed and clean HTML: answers hidden inside images, PDFs or heavy scripts are hard to extract.
  • Authority: links and mentions from credible sites still help both rankings and AI trust.
  • Topical depth: a site that covers its subject thoroughly beats a site with one lucky page.

That's why our SEO services in India and our GEO work share one plan. If you're still choosing between organic and paid, our SEO vs Google Ads guide covers that decision.

What actually changes with GEO: content, entities and off-site signals

Quotable answers

Put a direct 40 to 80 word answer near the top of each key page. Name the thing, answer the question, add the one qualifier that matters. Then go deeper. AI tools lift that opening passage constantly.

Formats AI engines like to cite

  • Direct answers under question-style headings.
  • Numbered steps and short lists.
  • Comparison tables with clear column labels.
  • FAQs written in natural question language.
  • Original facts: your process, your specifications, your service areas, stated plainly.

Structured data and entity clarity

Does structured data help GEO? It helps machines understand who you are. Organization or LocalBusiness schema, Product, FAQ where appropriate, and a consistent sameAs list linking your social profiles and directory listings. The bigger win is entity consistency: the same business name, address, phone, services and founder details everywhere online. Conflicting details make an AI hedge or skip you.

Brand mentions, reviews and off-site signals

Generative tools lean heavily on what other sites say. Industry directories, association listings, news coverage, comparison articles, Reddit and Quora threads, YouTube videos and Google reviews all shape the answer. A Vadodara engineering firm listed consistently on trade portals and mentioned in a couple of industry articles has a real edge over a better company that exists only on its own website. Reviews matter here too; see our guide to getting more genuine Google reviews.

How to measure GEO results (AI visibility tracking)

Measurement is still rough. Anyone showing you a precise "AI ranking" number is simplifying. Here's what works today.

  • Prompt tracking: keep a fixed list of 20 to 50 real buyer prompts, such as "best CNC machine supplier in Rajkot", and check monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google if you're mentioned, how you're described and which sources are cited.
  • Cited source review: note which third-party pages the AI keeps citing for your topic. Those are the sites where you need to appear.
  • AI referral traffic in GA4: create a channel group or exploration for sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar referrers. Watch the landing pages and conversions.
  • Brand search in Search Console: people often see you in an AI answer, then search your name. Rising branded impressions is a useful indirect sign.

Answers vary between sessions and users, so look at trends over months, not single screenshots.

GEO for business in India: local listings and regional languages

Can GEO help local businesses in India? Yes, and the local angle is underrated. When someone asks "good dermatologist in Anand who speaks Gujarati", the AI builds its answer from Google Business Profile data, reviews, local directories and your site.

  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with accurate categories and services.
  • Make sure Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha or industry listings match your site exactly.
  • Publish key pages in Gujarati or Hindi where your buyers use those languages. Models answer in the user's language and look for sources that match.
  • State your service areas in plain text: which towns and districts you cover. "Serving Charotar" means little to a model; "Anand, Nadiad, Petlad and Borsad" is clear.

GEO myths and the question of whether SEO is dead

Myths to ignore

  • "We guarantee you'll rank in ChatGPT." Nobody controls a model's output. You can improve your odds, not guarantee them.
  • "Add llms.txt and AI will recommend you." An llms.txt file can help some tools read your site, but no major AI search engine has confirmed using it as a ranking signal. It's a nice extra, not a strategy.
  • "Write for AI, not people." Content stuffed with keyword-style questions reads badly and gets cited less. Clear writing for humans is exactly what models extract well.
  • "GEO is instant." It rides on indexing, authority and mentions, all of which take months.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. Is it changing? Very much. Clicks on simple informational searches are falling as AI Overviews answer them directly. But AI tools still retrieve from search indexes, commercial searches still send clicks, and the Google results page still drives most enquiries for most Indian businesses. SEO done lazily is dying. SEO done well is now the foundation that GEO is built on.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand and content easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite in their answers. It combines SEO foundations, quotable content, consistent business details and third-party mentions so the AI recommends you accurately.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization is structuring content so a system can pull a direct answer from it, for featured snippets, People also ask boxes, voice assistants and AI tools. It focuses on clear question headings, short direct answers, lists and FAQs. It overlaps heavily with GEO, which adds a stronger focus on brand trust across many sources.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO aims to rank your pages in search results and win clicks. AEO aims to have your content extracted as a direct answer. GEO aims to get your brand mentioned and cited inside AI-written responses. All three share the same foundation: crawlable pages, useful content and authority. The difference is mainly in emphasis and measurement.

Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

They overlap heavily and some experts treat them as the same. In practice, AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search, while GEO refers to optimising for large language model answers that combine many sources. The practical work, clear answers, structure, consistency and mentions, is largely shared, so the label matters less than the actions.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI search tools retrieve pages from search indexes, so a site that isn't indexed and ranking reasonably is rarely cited. GEO builds on SEO by adding a focus on quotable answers, entity consistency and off-site mentions. Businesses that drop SEO for GEO usually lose on both.

Is SEO dead because of ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

No, but it's changing. Simple informational searches send fewer clicks because AI answers them directly. Commercial searches still send enquiries, and AI tools still depend on well-ranked, well-written pages as sources. Low-effort SEO is losing value, while thorough, useful content gains value in both search and AI answers.

How do generative engines choose sources to cite?

They typically rewrite your question into search queries, retrieve candidate pages from a search index, and have the language model write an answer using passages that are clear, specific and consistent with other trusted sources. The pages it relied on get cited. Brand familiarity from training data also influences which businesses get mentioned.

How do you measure GEO results?

Track a fixed list of real buyer prompts monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, noting if you're mentioned and which sources are cited. In GA4, segment referral traffic from AI tools such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Rising branded searches in Search Console are a useful indirect signal. Judge trends over months.

What content formats work best for AI answers?

Direct answers of 40 to 80 words under question headings, numbered steps, short lists, comparison tables with clear labels and natural-language FAQs work best. Original, specific facts such as specifications, processes and service areas are cited more than generic advice. Keep the answer in plain HTML text rather than inside images or PDFs.

Does structured data help GEO?

Structured data helps machines identify your business and content accurately, which supports GEO. Use Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to your profiles, plus Product, Service or FAQ markup where it genuinely fits. It isn't a shortcut on its own; consistent details across the web matter as much as the markup.

Can GEO help local businesses in India?

Yes. AI tools answering local prompts draw on Google Business Profile data, reviews, local directories and your website. Keeping these consistent, listing service areas in plain text and publishing key pages in Gujarati or Hindi where buyers use those languages all improve the chance of being recommended for local questions.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Usually a few months, and it tracks your SEO and reputation progress. Quick wins like fixing crawl access or rewriting a page's opening answer can show up within weeks for tools that search live. Being consistently recommended depends on authority and mentions that build over time, so plan on a similar horizon to SEO.

GEO kya hai, and is it only for big brands?

GEO means optimising your business so AI tools mention and cite it in their answers. It isn't only for big brands. Smaller businesses in niche or local categories often have a better chance, because fewer competitors publish clear, specific information that AI tools can quote with confidence.
