What generative engine optimisation (GEO) services actually involve
Strip away the buzzwords and GEO is simple to describe. It's the work of making sure that when an AI assistant builds an answer about your category, your business is part of the material it draws on, and that what it says about you is correct.
Three terms get mixed up constantly, so here are plain definitions.
SEO
Ranking web pages in Google's normal results. Still the base of everything that follows.
AEO (answer engine optimisation)
Shaping content so a search engine or assistant can lift a direct answer from it: a clear question, a short self-contained reply, then detail. Featured snippets, voice answers and FAQ-style AI responses all reward this.
GEO (generative engine optimisation)
Broader. It covers how large language models form an opinion about your brand from everything on the web, including your site, your Business Profile, directories, reviews, news, forums and comparison articles. Then it covers whether that opinion is strong enough for them to recommend you by name.
"AI SEO" and "LLM optimisation" are mostly marketing labels for the same bundle. Useful shorthand, nothing more. For a longer explainer, read our guide on what GEO is.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO: how they compare
They overlap more than agencies selling them separately admit. Here's how the goals and tactics differ.
| Aspect | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the quoted answer | Be named and recommended by AI |
| Where you appear | Google blue links, map pack | Snippets, voice, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode |
| What gets rewarded | Relevance, links, technical health | Clear, direct, structured answers | Consistent facts, trusted mentions |
| Key tactics | Pages, fixes, links | Question headings, FAQs, schema | Entity cleanup, citations, PR, reviews |
| How success is measured | Rankings, clicks, leads | Snippet and Overview appearances | Prompt tracking, AI referrals |
| Time to impact | Three to six months | Weeks to months | Months, varies by platform |
If your site isn't ranking at all in normal search, fix that through our SEO services first. GEO built on a weak site is decoration.

How ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews choose sources
Each platform works a little differently, which is why a single trick never covers all of them.
- ChatGPT answers partly from what the model learned in training and, when it searches, from live pages fetched through its own crawler and third-party search indexes. It doesn't read Google's rankings directly, so being properly indexed in Bing matters more than most Indian businesses realise.
- Gemini is tied closely to Google's own index and Knowledge Graph, and it's built into many Android phones, which is how a large share of Indian users meet it.
- Perplexity searches the web for almost every question and shows its sources openly, so well-structured pages that answer the exact query get cited often.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode summarise from pages Google already ranks and trusts, which is why classic SEO strength shows up here first.
Across all four, the pattern is similar. They favour sources that answer the question plainly, agree with other sources, and come from brands that are mentioned elsewhere. A business described the same way on its website, its Business Profile, IndiaMART and a trade article looks far more solid to a language model than one with three different stories.
Entity clarity: one consistent story about your business
An entity, in AI terms, is a thing the model can recognise: your company, its founder, its products, its location. Models get confused easily. Two companies with similar names, an old address on Justdial, a product listed under a different name on your catalogue. Confusion means they either skip you or describe you wrongly.
We build a fact sheet first: legal and trading name, founding details you're happy to publish, address, service areas, core services, product lines, certifications, key people. Then we check it against every place that matters.
- Your About, Contact and service pages, plus Organization and LocalBusiness schema.
- Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
- Indian directories such as Justdial, IndiaMART, TradeIndia and Sulekha, and industry association lists.
- LinkedIn company page, YouTube channel and other social profiles, linked through sameAs in schema.
- Wikipedia-style sources such as Wikidata, only where the business genuinely qualifies for a neutral entry.
It's unglamorous work. It's also where many quick wins hide, especially for businesses that have moved office or renamed a brand.

Answer-first content and FAQ blocks AI can lift
AI systems pull short passages, not whole pages. A page that answers "How long does GST registration take?" in the first sentence of a clearly labelled section is far easier to quote than one that makes readers scroll past three paragraphs of introduction.
We restructure your key pages so each question gets its own heading, a direct answer of two or three sentences, then the detail. We add FAQ blocks built from real buyer questions, pulled from sales calls, WhatsApp chats, People Also Ask boxes and Search Console. Comparison pages, pricing-factor pages and "how to choose" pages get special attention, because those prompts are where recommendations happen.
One caution. Answer-first doesn't mean thin. The pages that get cited usually have more specific detail than competitors, not less: named standards, real process steps, honest limits.
Schema markup in AI search: what it can and can't do
Structured data tells machines exactly what a page says: this is an organisation, here's its address, these are its services, this is a question and its answer. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList cover most businesses.
Does schema markup help in AI search? It helps parsing and consistency, and Google uses it to understand entities. It doesn't force any assistant to mention you. Some agencies sell schema as a magic switch for ChatGPT. It isn't. We add schema that matches what's visible on the page, validate it, and treat it as one supporting signal among many.
Third-party mentions: reviews, listicles, forums and press
Ask ChatGPT for "the best physiotherapy clinics in Vadodara" or "reliable brass component manufacturers in Jamnagar" and look at what it cites. Mostly other people's pages. Review sites, "top 10" articles, news stories, Reddit and Quora threads, directory profiles.
So GEO is partly a PR job. We find the lists, articles and discussions AI tools already use for your category, then work on getting you included where you deserve to be: pitching to publishers, supplying data or expert quotes to trade media, correcting outdated directory entries, and helping you answer genuine questions on forums under your real name.
Reviews count too. Plenty of recent, detailed Google reviews feed both Maps and AI answers for local searches. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews covers the rules.
llms.txt, robots rules and AI crawler access
You can't be cited if the AI crawler is blocked. We regularly find sites where a security plugin or a copied robots.txt blocks GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot without the owner knowing. Some firewalls block them too.
We review your robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules, and decide with you which bots to allow. Search-oriented crawlers usually should be allowed. Training crawlers are a business choice, and blocking Google-Extended affects Gemini training use rather than your normal Google rankings.
What is an llms.txt file and do I need one?
It's a proposed plain-text file that gives AI tools a clean summary of your site and links to key pages. Adoption by the big platforms is still unclear. It costs little to create and does no harm, so we add one, but we won't pretend it moves the needle alone. Pages that render their main text in HTML, without depending on heavy JavaScript, matter far more.
Measuring AI visibility honestly
Can you measure visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity? Partly. Anyone claiming precise AI rankings is overselling.
We build a prompt set for your business: twenty to forty questions a real buyer might ask, in English, Hindi and Hinglish, covering your services, locations and comparisons. Each month we run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then log if you're mentioned, if you're cited with a link, which competitors appear and what the assistant gets wrong about you.
We also track referral traffic in GA4 from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, and leads from those visits. Answers vary by session, account history and location, so we read the trend across the prompt set, never a single screenshot.
GEO for local businesses vs national and B2B brands in India
Local businesses
For a clinic, school or showroom, AI answers for "near me" style prompts lean on Maps data, reviews and local listings. Here, strong local SEO does most of the heavy lifting. In our home state, the city SEO pages show how local search behaves: for example the SEO company in Vadodara page, or those for Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Anand.
National and B2B brands
A Morbi tile exporter or an Ankleshwar chemical supplier gets asked about by buyers in other states and abroad. For them, the job is detailed product and application pages, trade media mentions and consistent company facts across B2B directories.
The Indian context
Indians prompt differently. Hinglish questions, a mix of English product names with Hindi or Gujarati phrasing, and voice queries through Gemini on Android are common. Google has rolled out AI Mode in India too. Can a small business in India compete in AI search? Yes, often more easily than in classic search, because assistants reward clarity and specific answers over domain size.
What we won't do, and realistic timelines
- Guarantee mentions in ChatGPT or any other assistant.
- Post fake reviews, sock-puppet forum answers or paid "mention farms".
- Publish hundreds of AI-written pages to flood the web.
- Rebadge ordinary SEO tasks as AI services without changing the work.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers? Perplexity and AI Overviews can reflect page changes within weeks, since they fetch live. ChatGPT's search answers move on a similar timescale. What the underlying models "know" about you changes slowly, over months, as mentions build up. Plan for three to six months before judging the trend.
Pricing follows our audit model: no packages. The free growth audit report includes an AI visibility snapshot, the plan and our fee, and we walk through it on a call, Google Meet or at our Anand office. Want to try the basics yourself first? Read how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to understand, trust and recommend. It covers consistent business facts across the web, answer-first content, schema, AI crawler access and genuine third-party mentions. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO ranks your pages in normal search results. AEO structures content so engines can quote it as a direct answer. GEO works on how AI models perceive and recommend your brand overall, using mentions, reviews and consistent facts. In practice one team should handle all three together, because they share the same foundations.
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make your website clear about who you are, what you do and where, keep those facts consistent everywhere, allow ChatGPT's search crawler, and earn mentions on sites ChatGPT already cites for your category. Answer buyer questions directly on your pages. There's no switch to flip; it's steady work on clarity and reputation.
How do I appear in Google AI Overviews?
Rank well for the underlying query first, because AI Overviews draw mostly from pages Google already trusts. Then structure those pages with question headings and short direct answers, add accurate schema, and keep facts specific. Google AI Overviews SEO is mostly good SEO plus sharper, answer-first formatting.
Does ChatGPT use Google search results?
Not directly. When ChatGPT searches the web it uses its own crawler and third-party search indexes rather than Google's rankings. That's why Bing indexing, open crawler access and clear HTML pages matter. Pages that rank well on Google often do well anyway, since the same qualities help everywhere.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Most AI answers are built from web pages that search engines have already crawled and ranked, so strong SEO remains the base. GEO adds work on entity consistency, mentions and answer formatting. Businesses that drop SEO to chase AI visibility usually end up with less of both.
Does schema markup help in AI search?
It helps machines read your facts accurately and keeps your entity consistent, which supports AI visibility. It doesn't guarantee a mention. Treat schema as one supporting signal, make sure it matches visible content, and validate it. Anyone selling schema as a direct route into ChatGPT answers is overselling.
Do reviews and mentions on other sites affect AI recommendations?
Yes, strongly. AI assistants lean on what others say about you: Google reviews, directory profiles, news, comparison articles and forum discussions. A business with consistent, positive third-party coverage is far more likely to be recommended than one that only describes itself on its own website.
Which AI platforms matter most for Indian customers?
ChatGPT has a large Indian user base, and Gemini reaches many people through Android phones and Google apps. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode appear right inside search, so they affect the most queries. Perplexity is smaller but popular with researchers and B2B buyers. We track all four.
Is AI SEO just a buzzword?
The label is, partly. The underlying shift is real: people ask assistants for recommendations and get one answer instead of ten links. Much of the work overlaps with good SEO, so be wary of agencies charging extra for renamed tasks. Ask to see the prompt tracking and specific deliverables.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?
No, and nobody honest can. AI answers vary by user, session and location, and the platforms change how they source information often. We can improve the signals these systems rely on and show you the trend through monthly prompt tracking. Treat any guarantee as a red flag.
Do you offer GEO services in Gujarat only?
No. Our office is in Anand and Gujarat is our home market, but GEO work is done online, so we work with businesses anywhere in India over phone, WhatsApp and Google Meet. Gujarat businesses in Vadodara or Ahmedabad can also meet us in person when needed.
