Quick answer
To rank in ChatGPT, make your business easy for AI search tools to find, read and trust. Allow OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot and Googlebot, submit sitemaps to Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console, publish a clear page per service with FAQs, keep listings consistent, and earn reviews and third-party mentions. BrainBean Technolabs in Anand, Gujarat does this as AEO/GEO work, with no guaranteed outcomes.
How to rank in ChatGPT: what it actually means
There is no position one in ChatGPT. Ask the same question twice and you may get different businesses, because answers depend on the exact prompt, the user's location, what they asked earlier, and which pages the tool fetched at that moment. So when owners ask us how to rank in ChatGPT, what they really mean is: how do I become one of the names it keeps suggesting?
That's a fair goal. It's also measurable, roughly, if you test the same prompts every month. This guide is written for Indian businesses, with examples from Gujarat where we work, but the mechanics apply anywhere.
Training data vs live search
A business can show up in two ways. The first is training data: what the model absorbed from the public web before its cutoff. You can't edit that directly, and it updates only when a new model ships. The second is live retrieval: ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews run a web search in real time, read a handful of pages, and summarise them. That second route is where you have real control, and it's what most of this guide is about.
Where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews get their answers
Each tool leans on a different index. Get into those indexes and you're eligible. Get quoted often across the web and you're likely.
| AI tool | Main data source | Crawler to allow | Local data | Fix first |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | Own crawler plus third-party search partners, Bing among them | OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot | Map and listing providers | Crawler access, Bing indexing |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google Search index | Googlebot | Google Business Profile | Indexing, GBP, reviews |
| Gemini | Google Search grounding | Googlebot | Google Maps data | Same as Google Search |
| Perplexity | Own index plus live fetches | PerplexityBot | Listings and review sites | Firewall rules, clear pages |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing index | Bingbot | Bing Places | Bing Webmaster Tools |
How does ChatGPT choose which businesses to recommend?
Nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact ranking. What we can see from testing is consistent, though. The businesses it names tend to have pages that answer the question directly, several independent sources saying the same thing about them, and plenty of recent reviews. When ChatGPT shows sources, click them. They tell you exactly which pages it trusted for that prompt, and often the answer is a directory or a listicle rather than the business's own site.
Let the right crawlers in: OAI-SearchBot, robots.txt and firewalls
This is the most common silent failure we find. The site looks fine to humans, but AI crawlers are blocked.
OAI-SearchBot and robots.txt
OpenAI uses separate user agents. OAI-SearchBot collects pages for ChatGPT search results. GPTBot collects data for model training. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT to open it. You can block GPTBot if you don't want to feed training and still allow OAI-SearchBot, which is the one that matters for being shown in search answers. Do the same review for PerplexityBot, Bingbot and Googlebot.
One common confusion: the Google-Extended token controls whether Google can use your content for Gemini model training. It does not remove you from Google Search or AI Overviews. Blocking it won't help or hurt your AI Overview visibility.
CDN and hosting blocks
Robots.txt isn't the only gate. Cloudflare and some other CDNs offer one-click AI bot blocking, and cheap shared hosts sometimes rate-limit unknown bots. Check your CDN's bot settings and your server logs for the user agents above. If they're getting 403 errors, the tools can't read you, however good your content is.
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console
Most Indian businesses have Search Console, if anyone set it up. Very few have Bing Webmaster Tools. Since Bing feeds Copilot and has long been one of ChatGPT's search partners, that's a gap worth closing in an afternoon.
- Bing Webmaster Tools for ChatGPT visibility: sign in, import your site straight from Search Console, and submit your XML sitemap. Turn on IndexNow if your CMS or plugin supports it, so new pages get noticed quickly.
- Google Search Console: submit the sitemap, then use URL Inspection on your key service pages. Look at the Pages report for anything marked "Crawled, currently not indexed".
- Check both monthly: an unindexed page can't be cited by any AI tool that relies on that index.
How to run a monthly AI visibility check
Takes about an hour once the sheet is set up.
- 01
Fix your prompt list
Write 15 to 25 prompts your buyers would really type, across services, locations and languages. Keep them unchanged month to month.
- 02
Use a clean session
Open a temporary chat or logged-out window for each tool so memory and history don't skew results.
- 03
Run every tool
Test ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Note whether an AI Overview or AI Mode answer appears.
- 04
Log names and sources
Record every business named and every source cited. The sources matter more than the names.
- 05
Turn gaps into tasks
If a directory or list keeps getting cited and you're missing from it, that's next month's job.
Local businesses: profiles, reviews and consistent details
For prompts like "best orthopaedic hospital in Anand" or "AC repair near Alkapuri", AI tools lean heavily on map and listing data. That makes AI recommendations for a local business in Gujarat, or anywhere in India, largely a local SEO problem.
Claim every profile
Start with Google Business Profile: correct primary category, services listed, hours, photos, and a description that says plainly what you do and where. Then claim Bing Places for Business, which can import from Google, and Apple Business Connect for iPhone users. Our local SEO services cover this setup if you'd rather not do it yourself, and the Google Business Profile checklist lists every field.
Reviews are read, not just counted
AI summaries often quote themes from review text: "patient doctors", "on-time delivery", "good for bulk orders". Volume and recency matter, but so does what customers actually write. Ask happy customers to mention the service they used. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews has scripts and timing that work without breaking Google's rules.
Keep your details identical everywhere
Name, address and phone should match across your website, GBP, JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Old numbers and a shifted address confuse both people and machines. If two sources disagree, an AI tool may skip you rather than risk being wrong.
Build pages AI tools can quote
ChatGPT SEO, or SEO for ChatGPT if you prefer, mostly comes down to pages that answer a question cleanly. A thin homepage listing twelve services won't get cited for any of them.
One page per service, one clear answer per page
Each service needs its own page stating who it's for, where you serve, how it works, how long it takes and how pricing is decided. Put a two or three sentence answer near the top that could be lifted word for word. That's the passage AI tools quote.
FAQs in your buyers' words
Write FAQs the way customers actually ask, including Gujarati or Hindi phrasing where your buyers use it. A Surat textile trader may type "wholesale kurti supplier Surat GST bill" rather than anything polished. Answer in the first sentence, then add detail.
Schema that matches the page
Add Organization or LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage markup, and keep it identical to the visible content. Google now shows FAQ rich results for very few sites, but the markup still describes your business clearly to any system reading the page. Markup that claims things the page doesn't say can do harm.
What about llms.txt for a business website?
An llms.txt file is a plain-text summary of your site meant for language models. It's cheap to add and harmless. But none of the major AI search products has confirmed using it, so treat it as optional housekeeping, never a substitute for the steps above.
Get cited by AI assistants through mentions on other sites
Your own site says you're good. Other sites saying it counts for more. AI answers for "best" and "top" prompts are often built from listicles, directories and discussion threads, so you want to be named in those places.
- Membership pages of your industry association or chamber of commerce.
- Local news coverage, even a small feature in a Gujarati daily's city edition.
- Genuine "top suppliers" or "best clinics" lists from sites with real editors.
- Helpful answers on Reddit and Quora from your team, disclosed as yours.
- Supplier or partner pages of brands you already work with.
Earn these, don't buy them. Paid placements in spammy "top 10" posts are easy to spot, and they tend to disappear or get discounted.
How to show up in ChatGPT search results: testing and tracking
You can't improve what you don't check. Build a fixed prompt set of 15 to 25 questions and run it once a month. Use a temporary chat or logged-out window so past conversations don't colour the answer, and note which location the tool assumes.
Sample testing prompts
- "Which is the best [service] in [city]?"
- "Recommend a [product] manufacturer in Gujarat that exports."
- "I need a [service] near [locality]. Who should I call?"
- "Compare [your business] and [competitor]."
- "What do customers say about [your business]?"
- The same prompts in Hindi or Gujarati.
Run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (checking for an AI Overview or AI Mode answer). Log each result in a Google Sheet: prompt, tool, date, businesses named, whether you appeared, and which sources were cited. After three months, the cited sources column becomes your to-do list. It also answers the question owners ask most: why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?
AI search visibility checklist
Use this as your working list. Most items take less than an hour each.
| Check | Where | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| AI crawlers allowed | robots.txt, CDN bot settings | OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot get 200 responses |
| Bing indexing | Bing Webmaster Tools | Sitemap submitted, key pages indexed |
| Google indexing | Search Console | Service pages indexed, no crawl errors |
| Local profiles | GBP, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect | Claimed, verified, categories correct |
| Consistent details | JustDial, IndiaMART, social profiles | Name, address, phone match exactly |
| Service pages | Your website | One page per service with a direct answer |
| Schema | Rich Results Test | Valid and matches visible text |
| Monthly test | Prompt log sheet | Results and cited sources recorded |
A 30/60/90 day plan
Days 1 to 30: fix access and basics
Audit robots.txt and CDN settings. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools and check Search Console. Claim or clean up GBP, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Correct your details on JustDial, IndiaMART and social profiles. Run your first prompt test and save it as the baseline.
Days 31 to 60: build answerable pages
Rewrite or create one page per core service with a direct answer at the top. Add buyer-phrased FAQs and matching schema. Start a steady review request routine after every completed job or order.
Days 61 to 90: earn mentions and measure
Pitch your association, a local paper and relevant lists. Answer real questions on Quora or Reddit. Rerun the prompt set and compare cited sources against day one. Then decide what to double down on.
Expect movement in Perplexity and Google first, since they fetch live. Training-data mentions change slowly. Realistically, AI visibility builds over 3 to 6 months, the same pace as good SEO.
Common mistakes, honest limits, and when to get help
- Blocking AI bots by accident through a security plugin or CDN toggle.
- Thin city-swap pages that say nothing specific.
- Fake or bought reviews. They get removed, and the pattern can hurt the profile.
- Different phone numbers and addresses across listings.
- Chasing one prompt instead of building a presence across many.
And the big one: nobody can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation. Not us, not any agency. The answer changes by prompt and user, and the companies behind these tools don't publish their ranking rules. Anyone promising "guaranteed top listing in ChatGPT" is selling hope.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make sure ChatGPT's search crawler can read your site, get indexed in Bing and Google, and publish a clear page for each service. Then keep your listings consistent, collect detailed reviews and earn mentions on trusted sites. There's no single switch. Recommendations come from being easy to find and repeatedly described the same way across the web.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to find businesses?
ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's own crawler plus third-party search providers, and Bing has long been one of them. It doesn't simply copy Google's results. That's why Bing Webmaster Tools matters. For local prompts it also draws on map and listing data, so profiles beyond Google, like Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, are worth claiming.
Can an agency guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?
No. Answers change with the prompt, the user and the pages fetched at that moment, and OpenAI doesn't publish its ranking rules. An honest agency can improve the signals AI tools rely on and track progress with a fixed prompt set. Anyone guaranteeing a top spot in ChatGPT is overselling.
Is ranking in ChatGPT different from normal SEO?
It overlaps heavily but isn't identical. Indexing, clear pages, reviews and links still matter. The differences: Bing counts more, crawler rules for AI bots matter, answer-first writing gets quoted, and third-party mentions carry extra weight because AI tools like to confirm claims across sources. Good SEO is the foundation, not the whole job.
Do Google reviews affect AI recommendations?
Yes, especially for local prompts. AI tools often summarise review themes, so the words customers use matter as much as the star rating. Steady, recent reviews that mention specific services help. Fake reviews are a bad idea: they get removed and can damage trust in the whole profile.
Should I allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt?
Yes, if you want to appear in ChatGPT search and Perplexity answers. OAI-SearchBot is what ChatGPT uses for search results, and blocking it keeps you out. You can still block GPTBot, the training crawler, if you prefer. Also check your CDN or firewall, which can block these bots even when robots.txt allows them.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It's optional. An llms.txt file summarises your site for language models, and it's quick to add. But no major AI search product has confirmed using it for rankings or citations. Spend your time on crawler access, indexing, service pages and reviews first, then add llms.txt as tidy housekeeping if you like.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Fixes to crawler access and indexing can show up in Perplexity and Google's AI features within weeks. Building enough reviews, pages and mentions to be recommended consistently usually takes 3 to 6 months. Anything that relies on model training data changes only when new model versions ship, which you can't control.
Does schema markup help with ChatGPT visibility?
It helps AI systems and search engines read your business details accurately, which supports visibility, but it's not a ranking trick. Use Organization or LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage markup that matches your visible content exactly. Markup describing things the page doesn't say can backfire.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?
Usually because more sources mention them, their pages answer the question more directly, or they have more recent reviews. Check the sources ChatGPT cites for that prompt. Often it's a directory, a news piece or a listicle where your competitor appears and you don't. Getting onto those sources is the fix.
Should my website have Gujarati or Hindi content for AI search?
If your customers ask questions in Gujarati or Hindi, yes. AI tools answer in the language of the prompt and look for matching content. Start with FAQs and key service pages in the languages your buyers use, written properly rather than auto-translated. English pages remain essential for buyers outside Gujarat.
Does being listed on JustDial or IndiaMART help AI recommendations?
It can. These directories are crawled and sometimes cited, and they confirm your name, address and phone number. The benefit depends on accuracy: an outdated listing with an old number works against you. Keep them consistent with your website and Google Business Profile, and don't rely on them alone.
How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Run a fixed set of buyer-style prompts in a temporary chat each month, for example "best [service] in [city]", and log who gets named and which sources are cited. Repeat in Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Tracking the same prompts over time shows real progress better than a single lucky answer.
